The Kooples

Posted on the November 16th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

When I was in Paris earlier this week, I kept seeing poster ads for The Kooples, featuring very hip and beautiful couples highlighting how many years they’ve been together. I didn’t get a chance to check out the shop, but I just checked out their website and found out they have video ads as part of their campaign with even more painfully hip and beautiful couples.

The Kooples is a French label founded by three brothers Alexander, Laurent and Raphael – the sons of the people behind the Comptoir des Cotonniers womenswear.

The Kooples is bringing chic back to the streets, dressing men and women in sharp allure, with a style borrowed from icons of fashion and a love for vintage.

This franco-british elegance made for urban living has everything from dress shirts to party dresses, jeans to suits, shoes to jewels, and a state of mind that has the somber thoughts of night owls falling in love in the early hours of the morning.

The Kooples has chosen to side with SavileRow, that neighborhood in London made famous for its tailoring. By teaming up with these master tailors, The Kooples has created the hip neo-dandy with a tailored fit, narrow sleeves and snug shoulders. A London cut revisited by the infamous “je ne sais quoi” of the French.

And, because music is an integral part of the brand’s image, The Kooples is launching The Kooples Records, a platform for indie, rock, pop, electro, and folk… celebrating the talent of couples. (via TheKooples.com)

Here are some if the videos I’m talking about (you can see more videos here). Not sure if they are real couples, but if they are, I hope they don’t break up. Otherwise would be awfully awkward.

Paris in November

Posted on the November 16th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

I just got back from Paris, I went for Paris Photo 2011 and a plethora of photography exhibitions happening across the city. I love Paris in November, no tourists, crisp autumn weather, perfect weather for hot chocolate and sitting alone in cafes watching the world pass by.

I will try to post about the photography exhibitions I went to, but for now, here’s a small selection of photos of some street art taken around Marais and Centre Pompidou. They bought a smile to my face.

London Bus Tour

I’m in London for a couple of days, so I feel it’s quite befitting to share this gorgeous video by Cyrill Oberholzer shot whilst riding on one of London’s double decker buses. I love the mood it captures and hope you like it too.

In Cyrill Oberholzer’s own words:

Who does not like looking out of the window while being in a bus?
Everything is shot handheld with an hd camera and a DIY 35mm adapter while sitting in one of those red vehicles of London.

Exhibition – photoID

Posted on the November 8th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

photoID is a new group photography exhibition organised by Gulf Photo Plus, opening on 13th November and will be on till 15th January 2012. The exhibition focuses on the subject of identity with images varying in perspective and approach.”the identity of a human being, of a city or organization, even an inanimate object can become warped by stereotypes, assumptions, and multilayer cultural contexts”.

The photographers taking part in this exhibition include Tamara Abdul Hadi, Ammar Al Attar, Richard Allenby-Pratt, Philip Cheung, Gerald Donovan, Katarina Premfors and yours truly. Not only are some of these photographers personal friends, but all are very well respected in the photography community locally and internationally, so I’m in very good company.

In photoID Abdul Hadi deconstructs the stereotypical assumptions of the ‘young male Arab’, whereas Al Attar explores the many faces drawn together on a journey to Mecca. Cheung and Donovan consider the identity of two separate cities, both existing in transition, while Mezaina and Premfors use the identity of inanimate objects in curious states to encourage the viewer to consider what these objects confess about human behaviour.  Allenby-Pratt focuses on Art Dubai, layering images to create interactions that did not in fact exist, yet express more about the identity of the fair than a single image could.

Here’s a small selection of the photos from the exhibition.

Gayathri – Champion of Broken Hearts

Posted on the November 8th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

© Aya Atoui

Gayathri is one of my favourite singers in Dubai. She is releasing her new single and video Champion of Broken Hearts on Thursday, 10th November at Traffic. The event will be an homage to the 1940s Jazz Club days of big bands and tap dancing featuring a live performance by Gayathri accompanied by The Little Band with other celebrated local musicians making guest appearances. If you are in Dubai that evening, please don’t miss this event.

Gayathri describes herself asa singer/songwriter and an ol’ fashioned audiophile. My songs are my mouthpiece, my confidantes and my most honest expression. Driven by simple self-taught guitar chords and notes, the occasional piano, thick string motifs, rhythmic sniffs, foley, the music I make, tells the stories of the mind, its workings, the loves, the losses and everything in between.”

© Aya Atoui

I’ve seen Gayathri perform live on three occasions and each time she adds something different to her shows which makes each one a unique experience. The song Champion of Broken Hearts has already received positive reviews and I just heard the song and I like it, particularly the catchy chorus:

Jumpkicked in the heart
Defeated from the start
Champion of Broken Hearts
DING! DING! DING!

To whet your appetite, here’s a trailer to the video Champion of Broken Hearts, directed by Mrinal B.

As an added bonus, the launch night will also include a limited edition CD/DVD release of the single with free custom-made ‘Champion of Broken Hearts’ give-aways created by Vikram Divecha (5% of all the proceeds from CD sales will go to charity).

A sample of the art work in progress

So all in all, you should expect a night packed with some good creative energy. Please go and show some support to our musicians and buy the single if you like it. Many people are still suprised to find out we have a creative community and we need to celebrate them more often, particularly the ones paving their own way.

I leave you with some older tracks by Gayathri to give you a taste of what to expect on Thursday.
