‘I Finally Cracked It!’

Posted on the November 1st, 2011 under Uncategorized by

"I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use, it would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it." (Steve Jobs)

One of the last catch phrases that Steve Jobs left behind before his recent death, built anxiety within technology enthusiasts into what would the next generation of Televisions look like and what are the competitive advantages it would bring to the market.

PHOTO BOOTH – Manarat Al Saadiyat

Posted on the November 1st, 2011 under Uncategorized by

I passed by an interesting looking gigantic cube on my way to Emirati Expressions Exhibition in Manarat Al Saadiyat and was curious to know what was it. It was an over-sized Photo-booth. The Photo-booth is running in conjunction with Emirati Expression exhibition. A photographic portrait of yourself will be taken of you,  free of charge, which is then printed on an A0 size paper, and dropped through the red slit above. You'll have the choice to take your portrait, or participate in the Inside Out Art Project by pasting your portrait on designated walls in Manarat Al Saadiyat. Inside Out installed similar booths in Paris, Arles, Palestine and Israel. [Above Image]
Photo-booth ends 28th January, 2012 at 10 pm.
Many people participated at Abu Dhabi's booth, and there were some interesting and creative portrait poses. Here are some photos from my visit:

SPAR – A New Supermarket in Town

Posted on the October 31st, 2011 under Uncategorized by

A new retail shop just joined the competition in Abu Dhabi giving customers more options for quality grocery shopping experience around the capital. It used to be Spinney's, Abella, or Carrefour only. Ok, maybe not Carrefour; forgot I said 'quality experience'. Spar, the giant Dutch retail chain, is expanding in the Middle East by launching their first store in the capital earlier this month with plans to open a second one in the near future also in Abu Dhabi.
I visited the store and it looked promising. They seem to focus on fresh food like fruits, vegetables, deli, and meats. I also spotted few products that I haven't seen in other supermarkets. I liked that they had a bakery, a Chinese food kitchen, and a fresh fruit juice bar. I also liked the fact that their shelves were not giant walls of products, rather, they were taller than an average human hight, making it easier to browse for stuff, and adding to the coziness factor for the shopper. Yes people! I care about the 'coziness factor' when I do my grocery shopping; that includes lights, music, shelves hight to name few.

(Update) Events: Emirati Expressions – Abu Dhabi

Posted on the October 30th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

'Emirati Expressions will showcase Emirati identity through an exhibition of photographs by Emirati artists, as well as by guest photographers especially invited to work with the artists and the public to explore an Emirati identity that is inherently global.   The artists will capture moments, places, people, sounds and mirages that reflect the essence of what is an Emirati expression.

The exhibition will feature photographs by Emirati artists developed through a series of workshops led by photographer Stephen Shore that began this May and will run for four months'  AbuDhabiEvents.ae
This exhibition would be something really interesting to see and experience. Unfortunately I won't be in Abu Dhabi this week. I will visit soon though and update this post with some photos from the planned visit. Looking forward to seeing the work of talented Emiratis, which will include the following local artists:

News: Ubisoft Anchors in Abu Dhabi

Posted on the October 30th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

UBISOFT, a world leading video game publisher; and developer of best game console titles like Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy series, will be establishing a new development studio with TWOFOUR54 and participate in a new game development academy in Abu Dhabi under Tadreeb Division thus creating 100 jobs over the next 5 years.

This marks the first time a major games publisher establishing presence in the GCC, and what this means for us is that this will develop regional talent by entering new sectors. Finally you would be able to play games with true Arab influence towards production and publishing where new professional Arab-based companies will deliver games to XboX and PS consoles.

Books: Business Model Generation

Posted on the October 30th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

If you are planning to start your own business but can’t figure out where and how to start, or you’ve already embarked on a new startup, or want to do a reality check for you currently running business, this book is a valuable source and a must-read. BMG was co-authored by 470 ‘Business Model Canvas’ practitioners from 45 countries by launching a Hub community of business model innovation practitioners resulting in the contribution of content, design, illustrations, and structure of the book. As far as I know, this approach could be the first in business book writing.
BMG is different from other business books, which are mostly text oriented, in that it contains both a mixture of straight-forward narrative and creative visual illustrations and tools you can easily implement, which makes it easy and fun to read. BMG presents case studies from Apple, Skype, Google, Procter & Gamble and others following their simple 9 Building Blocks of their Business Model Canvas that could be implemented on both profit and non-profit sectors.

If you read the book, or will read it in the future, will be interested in listening to you thoughts.

Business Model Generation is available at Kinokuniya at The Dubai Mall – Dhs 150. You can also purchase it online from Amazon for  $18.71 – around Dhs 70.

A date with Dates

Posted on the October 26th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

*A common sight at Al Ain Oasis
We’ve been to Al Ain Oasis a couple of weeks ago for a photo walk. We were exploring the intricate routes when we saw these men harvesting some date fruits. Out of curiosity and armed with my basic Arabic, I spoke to one of the farmers. We’ve learned that some of the high-quality dates are picked individually by hands, but most of the time, date fruits are harvested by cutting off the entire cluster or in a bunch and thrown on the ground covered with a mesh or laminated sack. They will hand picked the date fruits on the ground and  put it inside the open plastic container after they sorted out the ripe ones. They also mentioned that low quality dates are packed and given to the camels and goats, a nutritious food for the animals. :) )
These photos were taken with permission.

Sunset catchers

Posted on the October 26th, 2011 under Uncategorized by

If you’re a regular visitor of this blogsite, I guess you are aware that I am crazy about sunsets. I do spend a couple of hours waiting for the sun’s disk disappear below the horizon. I can even bear the humid temperature in Dubai whenever I am visiting the Jumeriah Open Beach at Umm Suqueim.
These photos were taken a month ago. We’ve been to Dubai to check out the prizes of Canon cameras but we opted to watch the sunset at Jumeirah before we headed to Dubai Mall. We we’re unlucky though because of the weather. While the sun was setting below the horizon, there was a thick layer of dust hovering above us and prompted us to stay inside the car. Alas! I ended up taking photos inside the car. Sigh*
I have a habit of watching the people around me whenever I am clicking especially the sunset catchers like me
and pose before the camera while waiting for the sunset
the Burj Al Arab and the sunset
 Better luck next time Misalyn!
